Copy and pasted From a Forum I ran across...

Can you believe gas is $3 now? Ridiculous. Right now, obviously, this is because of Katrina, but it's overpriced to begin.

There's an idea going around that really makes sense, to lower gas prices. This is sort of long and very political, so if you could care less, skip all this right now...The reason gas prices are so high is NOT because of a gas shortage (well, now it is, with Katrina, but again, that's not the reason for the last 6 months). It is NOT because of Iraq. It is NOT because of China. If you really want me to, I can prove it, but that would take awhile. Basically, just trust me that if there was any sort of a real gas shortage, why would people still be able to buy as much gas as they always did? I haven't bought less gas in the last 6 months, I just paid more for the same amount. If there was a shortage, why is there just as much gas for me as there always was?

The reason is two things. The first is speculation. The oil industry has people that go out there and say, We foresee gas prices going up this weekend. Now that the oil people have you ready to pay more...they raise the price. Wow, what a neat little scam. There's no outside influence to force them to raise that price, they just make up a reason and get you ready to shell out the money.

The second is that the oil is all in the hands of the few wealthiest. When you actually look at all the companies, the same three or four people control ALL OF OUR GAS. So, essentially, they have a monopoly. They don't need to offer a fairly priced, competitive product. So they don't invest ANY of their profit to build better machinery or new refineries that could lower the cost of our gas. They could, they just don't. Why should they? It would cut into their profit.

So, here's the solution I heard, and I like it. Don't buy gas this Monday or Tuesday (longer if you can help it). NOW, keep in mind...you have to actually avoid driving. Use as little gas as possible Monday and Tuesday. Walk to work if you can. Stay home for dinner instead of going out. If you just go through a full tank of gas and fill up the next day, it won't cut into their profits at all. The idea is to scare the gas companies. To make them realize that, Hey, we just jacked the price up AGAIN, and now we're selling less gas this week. Maybe we better take it back down. Maybe people are getting sick of it and are buying less gas. They're just going to raise the prices until so many people get hybrid cars, or carpool or whatever, that they lose money on gas sales. Then suddenly, they'll "find" a way to drop the price and entice people back into buying gas freely again. So, we stop buying gas Monday and Tuesday, and if we can get ENOUGH people (all over) on board, it could actually be noticed by the oil tycoons.

I'll be honest with you, although it makes sense, it might not work now with everything going on Katarina...(isn't that all a mess, by the way? Awful..). But I say, it can't hurt to try, cause I can't afford $3 a gallon gas. It may take a few "boycotts" to get momentum going, but right now, I think people are getting desperate.

(Please note this was never my idea, I'm not smart enough for that. I just think it's crazy enough to work!)

If you're on board, e-mail this to relatives, copy it into your journal, do whatever you want to try and get the word out for Monday. It'll only work if we get a TON of people to do it.

Let me know if you think it makes sense....
